Fireside Charla, a New Podcast with President Adela de la Torre, Arrives in Time for Women’s History Month

Fireside Charla officially launched on March 1.
By Maria Keckler

When Adela de la Torre became president of San Diego State University last year, she embarked on a listening tour involving hundreds of conversations and fireside chats (charlas) with SDSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. They shared stories of the university’s 121-year legacy as a catalyst for groundbreaking teaching, research, innovation, and creative activities.

In Fireside Charla, de la Torre’s new podcast, she shares those stories through casual conversations with diverse leaders and trailblazers who comprise the greater SDSU community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders. The topics range from aerospace to augmented reality, from SDSU history to innovative classrooms and learning experiences that are preparing the global citizens, compassionate leaders, and ethical innovators who will impact their communities and the world.

Why Fireside Charla

“It’s important for us to reach people about the great work that has been done at San Diego State,” said de la Torre. “Every single day there are innovative projects occurring here that people just don't know about. And many, many people don't realize that San Diego State is a great research institution, as well as a great institution for our students.”
Just in time to celebrate women’s history month, Fireside Charla launches with two episodes available on any podcast app, including iTunes, Stitcher, GooglePlay, and Spotify.
In Charla #1, alumna Perette Godwin asks the president to share her trajectory to becoming SDSU’s first female president. De la Torre talks about the hurdles she's overcome to get here, the mentors who inspired her to press on, and what she hopes her vision for SDSU and this Fireside Charla podcast will accomplish as the university embarks on its next chapter of distinction.
“I'm hoping we will able to tell the story about San Diego State, the great institution that I lead, and also to inspire young women who may in the future want to be university presidents or CEOs,” said de la Torre. “I have this unique opportunity to do both things: talk about a great institution, but also to be an important role model so that other individuals who look like me, who are like me, can see a future in leadership in higher education and beyond.”
In Charla #2, de la Torre talks to Seth Mallios, the University History Curator and an anthropology professor at SDSU, about why Presidential Inaugurations matter and why de la Torre’s own inauguration on April 11th, 2019, is a historic event the entire community will want to attend.
“At the end of the day, the idea of a fireside charla means having those wonderful conversations, having those plática or talks that allow people to eavesdrop on conversations that are so important in daily life,” said de la Torre.
